A generator for Valve's self-shadowed bump mapping, integrated into Substance Designer for a faster workflow.

  • Featuring several parameters to control height, optional hard shadows, length, attenuation, and ambient light intensity.
  • Results in near real-time using Substance Designer's GPU-driven RT shadow and ambient occlusion nodes.
  • Sharper, higher-fidelity outputs than with Valve‘s command line tool.


Current version: 1.1.0 for Substance Designer 12.1.0 and onward.

Known Issues:

  • Height map inputs using lossy or compressed formats like .jpg will result in artifacts caused by bad colour space conversion (Thanks to @glassbottommeg for the explanation). 16-bit PNG image inputs tend to generate the best results.
  • Harsh changes in height will sometimes result in Peter Panning of ray-traced shadows. Unfortunately, this is a bug with Substance's RT shadow node that will hopefully be fixed in a future release.
